Vision Board Basics

What is a Vision Board?

A vision board is a visualization tool that brings your wants and desires to the forefront of your everyday life.

What will it do for you:

Generate Inspiration

Prepare a plan for the future

Give your something to look forward to

Build a tool to take charge of your life

Create a year that will be your best year

Achieve your goals and dreams

It’s time to take action and live your best life. Bring your visions and dreams to life.

Bulletin board with motivational quotes, photos, and decorative items, divided into categories like Health, Family, Purpose, Enjoyment, and New Year, decorated withpins, stickers, and small objects.

Why it works:

By focusing on certain items each day, even by seeing them on a board, you will attract more of those items and feelings into your life.

When you focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want, the items you don’t want with gradually fade away, and you will stop attracting them.

You can create a separate, specific board for milestones such as; getting married, having a baby, adopting a pet, etc. You can even call it a dream board, possibilities board or goals board.

A motivational collage on a whiteboard with words like 'Feel Good,' 'Self Care,' 'Joy,' 'Relaxation,' and images promoting relaxation and well-being.

How to Get Started

Decide on Your Timeframe

Look at your calendar and pick a day and time you can dedicate to creating your board. Make sure it’s a day when you won’t have any distractions.

Think of the categories or sections for the desires you want to focus on

Some common categories to focus on are self-care, travel, health, wealth, passion and career, or family and friends.

Start looking for pictures or quotes that fit your desires

Refer to magazines, internet, vision board books with pictures, online quotes that correspond with your desires.

Questions to ask yourself:

What makes you smile? What do you enjoy? When and where is important to you?

Do you want to focus on health? How? Define what exercises you will do and when. Will you eat healthy foods? If so, what foods?

Do you want a new house or maybe just to redecorate one room? Make a wish list of all the different rooms and what would go into each room.

Do you want a different car? If so, what car? Make a list of exactly what you want.

Do you want to travel? If so, where do you want to go and when?

Do you want to spend more time with family and friends? What do you want to do with them and when will you do it?

Do you want to work on your finances? How can you find support to improve? Explore online classes, courses or even engage a financial advisor.

Do you want to eliminate stress? What stresses you out?

Create Your Board

Supplies

Tables with magazines, bead organizers, craft supplies, and stacks of notebooks or planners.

The board or background:

Corkboard, poster board, notebooks, cardboard, or even regular paper

Items to put on the board:

Pictures, quotes, stickers, shapes, etc.

Gather scissors, thumbtacks, tape, scrapbook paper, anything you want for attaching to the boards.

All of these items can be found at a dollar store, craft store, or department store. It’s your board, so be as fancy or as simple as you want.

Find a quiet place where you will not have any interruptions. Take all your items and arrange them on the board until you have the layout you desire, and then attach them on the board.

Put this board up where you can see it often. Take a picture of it on your phone. The key is that you need to look at it and bring those things to you. Just making a board and placing it where you might look at it occasionally, is not enough.
